A tornado hit the town of Star Valley, Arizona prompting the National Weather Service’s Flagstaff branch to survey damage to the area. The damage indicated an EF-1 tornado with peak winds ranging from 95 to 105 mph. Nobody was hurt in the tornado however one dog was killed by the gusts and 10 homes were damaged from the wind.
$30M BIL INVESTMENT ADVANCES SUPERFUND CLEANUP ON ATLANTA’S WESTSIDE
Federal, state and local officials gathered in Atlanta’s Westside last Thursday evening to recognize two milestones in the cleanup of the Westside Lead Superfund Site. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) $30 million is being invested to support the Westside cleanup. The other milestone being celebrated is 20 Atlanta area residents graduated from the EPA’s Superfund Job Training Initiative or “SuperJTI.”
The BIL funds will be used to excavate and safely dispose of lead-contaminated soil at residential properties. There are 2,097 properties in the study area and 1,251 properties have been sampled so far. Of those, 528 had lead in the soil above 400mg/kg threshold for cleanup and cleanup activities have been completed at 229 properties. The EPA continues to seek permission from property owners and tenants on the Westside to perform free sampling of their yards.
WHAT HURRICANE IAN DESTROYED IN A FLORIDA BEACH TOWN
Fort Myers Beach, Florida, acts as a barrier island on the southwestern side of Florida. Fort Myers sustained extensive damage after Hurricane Ian made landfall on September 28th. Boats were washed up into neighborhoods and some buildings were gone entirely. The buildings that did remain standing had their entire first floor destroyed. The Ney York times was able to identify 400 buildings as visibly damaged through a survey of photographs and videos of the Hurricane Ian's aftermath. The damage identified is just a fraction of the destruction brought by the storm across all of Fort Myers Beach and the swath of the central Florida coast. The main commercial area, nicknamed “Times Square,” was almost completely leveled.
Wyoming’s New Nuclear Power Plant Would Be the First of It’s Kind. What Makes It Different?
Wyoming’s governor, Mark Gordon revealed the production of a nuclear power plant designed with the world’s first Natrium reactor. A Natrium reactor is a small modular reactor (SMR), whereas most nuclear power plants contain a large reactor. Large reactors can result in multi-billion-dollar investment and long-term production. With SMR production, cost-saving is guaranteed due to smaller size and designed to replace coal-fired plants.
