Heavy snowfall hit the Lone Star state on February 15, 2021 causing many homes to lose power and pipes to freeze and burst. These water leaks caused advisory warnings about the safety of drinking water, and many residents were instructed to boil water before use. Food shortages also affected Texans as grocery store shelves were emptied and deliveries could not be made due to icy road conditions.
Some researchers suggest that the damages caused by the storm could top the estimated $125 billion in damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. This, in part, is because the storm affected the entire state rather than a smaller area.
In the wake of the storm, several lawsuits have been filed including wrongful death claims and property damage and personal injury claims. A class-action suit has also been filed against the Electric Reliability Council of Texas; however, property value damages have yet to be determined.
